Monument Valley National Park

Monument Valley National Park, Utah is located on top of a large area of uplifted bedrock. The Monument anticline extends nearly 100 miles to the south of the Needles region in Canyonlands, Utah. The uplifted rock is heavily eroded along its axis, exposing ancient geologic strata in the canyons. Where the San Juan river cuts across the uplifted rocks, an entire sequence of Permanian age (~ 300 million years old) red colored rock beds are magnificently exposed, as is several hundred feet of the older Pennsylvanian age rock along the Honaker / Kueny Trail.

Westerns shot in the park:

Kit Carson-1940
Billy the Kid-1941
My Darling Clementine-1946
Fort Apache-1948
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon-1949
The Searchers-1956
Sergeant Rutledge ~ 1960
How the West Was Won-1962
Mackenna's Gold-1969
